The Rules
You have to role play a caveman - sorry only kidding. Actually, you have to adhere to a diet with the same limitations as the Stone Age man (or woman). Basically he had to hunt or forage - cavemen didn't farm and cultivate, hence no grains or refined sugar. Plus no dairy as cavemen didn't herd or milk cattle.
Also to be taken into consideration is whether food would be edible raw, therefore potatoes, sweet potatoes and beans cannot be consumed.
Mantra - You can eat food that is edible raw (and I don't mean chocolate and other modern day snacks).
Just thought you might be interested, sweet potato, or at least the one I am talking about (Ipomoea batatas), can actually be eaten raw. I consume them often sliced up in my salads. It tastes and looks very similar to carrots. But you must check first into the type because as you correctly mentioned, real potato and yam species are toxic if consumed raw.
Interesting fact, sweet potato is actually extremely distantly related to potatoes and yams. Its not really counted as one even.

He's an extra tidbit. Apparently it's good for diabetics also because of it's ability to stabilize blood sugar levels and to lower insulin resistance.

Yes I certainly am, I'd been suprised to see it previously mentioned in some raw recipies. I'm not sure I've ever seen any that look like carrots (I think our choice is limited in the UK) - something for the garden.
My diabetes was progressing far to rapidly and given the improvement the dietary changes have made so far, if I can use foods positively I may even be able to come off medication (that's the 'target'), this tidbit is really useful - appreciated.
